What does carbon-balanced mean?
The environmental impact of your marketing materials is offset (balanced) through the protection and restoration of endangered woodland and habitats.
The World Land Trust (WLT) Carbon Balanced programme balances emissions through the protection of forests that are imminently threatened, the destruction of which would release greenhouse gases, and through the restoration of forest habitats, which sequester atmospheric carbon as they grow.
What's the difference between carbon-balanced and eco-friendly?
Going carbon-balanced is an eco-friendly choice. Print itself is generally eco-friendly, as paper is recyclable and new paper products often contain a certain percentage of recycled material.
The main difference between carbon-balanced and eco-friendly print is you are helping to preserve and protect endangered, carbon-rich habitats through the work of the World Land Trust. Choosing carbon-balanced means choosing to actively make a positive impact on the environment now.
What's the price difference between standard and carbon-balanced print?
As Carbon Balanced paper significantly positively impacts the environment compared to eco-friendly and standard paper, there is a slight price increase on the print element. However, as our prices are very competitive, you will often find our quotes are cheaper than companies printing on standard paper.
How do you prove/demonstrate my job has been carbon-balanced?
For every carbon-balanced print job, we will report the size and weight of the paper used to the World Land Trust (WLT).
This will give us feedback on how much CO2 you've offset with your campaign and how many square metres of endangered habitat you've preserved. Even small jobs will have a cumulative impact.
We will award you with a WLT certificate, which includes a calculation of how much habitat you've protected and how many kg of CO2 you've balanced (offset).
To spread the word, we will also provide you with social media collateral - we hope you can inspire others to go green too!
How do you make it (Print, Direct Mail, Leaflet Distribution, Pick & Pack) greener?
By partnering with the World Land Trust and becoming an accredited Carbon Balanced Printer, Greener Mail ensures that every print and packaging service we offer is carbon-balanced.
Therefore, the more you print, the more direct mail, leaflet distributions, or pick-and-pack jobs you do with us, the more you protect and preserve our precious climate.
Who are the World Land Trust, and what do they do?
Since its inception in 1989, World Land Trust has gone on to support local conservation partners in more than 30 countries, raising funds to protect some of the world's most biologically significant and threatened habitats.
World Land Trust and its overseas project partners have been instrumental in the purchase and protection of more than 2,833,674 acres of tropical forest and other threatened habitats, and together ensure that more than four million acres of land is managed under active protection worldwide. They have also planted over 2,742,000 trees and protected over 11,971 species!
Is Sir David Attenborough affiliated with the World Land Trust?
Very much so! Sir David has supported the World Land Trust since it was founded in 1989 and became WLT's official Patron in 2003. A couple of significant quotes from him include:
"The sensible attitude to conservation is to conserve animal and plant communities and that means land… World Land Trust recognised that a long time before others and it became their first objective."
"The money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of."
Where are they protecting, preserving and planting?
Choosing Carbon Balanced Print, Paper and Packaging will fund World Land Trust's ecosystem protection and restoration projects in 28 locations worldwide, including Vietnam, Mexico, Ecuador and Guatemala.
For example, in Ecuador alone the WLT has:
World Land Trust's Carbon Balanced projects have been designed according to the robust and internationally recognised Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) standard to ensure they deliver REDD+ outcomes (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).
What are you doing as a company to be more sustainable?
We have had an energy resource audit to establish our current environmental impact, creating a plan for implementing interventions to reduce our carbon output significantly. For example, in our premises, we've fitted LED lights, implemented and actively encouraged company-wide recycling, and participated in the cycle-to-work scheme.
Annually, we offset our energy output through a contribution to the WLT (which is part of the criteria for becoming an accredited Carbon Balanced Printer). We are also planning the installation of solar panels, motion sensor shutters and other energy-reducing features.
How will choosing carbon-balanced print services help my company?
If you have sustainability goals to reach, choosing carbon-balanced print will contribute to achieving these goals quicker with your marketing. You can improve your brand image by becoming a brand ambassador and shout about it on your social media, and you can improve the positivity of your brand image.
A stronger brand image will likely lead to more sales and customer loyalty (statistics demonstrate that more people will often choose a company striving towards sustainability).
"55% of young people in the UK say they would be more loyal to a brand that was reducing its carbon footprint." Carbon Trust
How can I make a difference personally?
Great question! There are two ways specific to our carbon-balanced offering. The first is to ensure your company purchases carbon-balanced print and print-based marketing and packaging (which we can help with!).
The second is you can personally become involved with the World Land Trust. There are several ways to do this, so to find out more, please visit:
